Other surprise Idols on the list include David Cook, David Archuleta, and Kellie Pickler--all of whom recently parted ways with their record labels, but seem to be doing just fine--and Adam Lambert, who, despite his sophomore album Trespassing not selling nearly as much as his 2009 debut, still pocketed $1.5 million from television appearances and international touring. (Adam dropped from the number-two spot on last year's Forbes list mainly because he took a lengthy touring break to record Trespassing.) This just goes to show that the success of many Idols is not entirely based on record sales, despite what Interscope Records' Jimmy Iovine might want to believe. Below is Forbes' full top Idol earners list.

Calling all Glamberts, today is Adam Lambert’s birthday! We took a look back at the past year to celebrate the “American Idol” alumni’s successful year. Adam even went on to win our fan voted polls for being the male artist of 2012 and having the best album of 2012. Besides dominating fan-based polls, he’s making a fashion statement, so check out the gallery below to see his look through the years. The vocal powerhouse released an album in 2012, Trespassing, which debuted at number one. The album included hit songs like “Never Close Our Eyes” and “Better Than I Know Myself“. Today (January 29) he’s celebrating his 31st birthday, and last night Adam Lambert got things started with a fun-filled evening in West Hollywood. The “For Your Entertainment” crooner headed over to Riva Bella Ristorante for a delicious Italian dinner with a female friend. In career news, Lambert will soon be the very first “American Idol” alum to perform his own solo concert in China. Adam has announced plans for a pair of gigs in Shanghai and Hong Kong that will take place on March 3rd and March 5th, respectively. Apparently Lambert has a ton of “Glamberts” in China, so tickets will likely be pretty hard to come by. Enjoy the pictures of Adam Lambert at Riva Bella Ristorante in West Hollywood (January 28).
